Dave is a retired educator after 34 years as a teacher and wrestling coach, 25 years in the Crosby-Ironton Schools, and 9 at Graceville, Minnesota.
He is married to Mary a registered nurse who works part time as a home care nurse after retiring from full time status, and they live at Riverton, Minnesota. They have two children, Jennifer, married to Scott, and Andrew, married to Yumi.
Dave is self taught on the guitar, bass, banjo, dobro, and mandolin. He began learning to play the guitar as a teenager. Elvis was his big influence to get started, but soon discovered he likes all kinds of music.
Bluegrass is a relatively new undertaking for him. He really likes music done by Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Diamond, the Eagles, among others, and some country music. He is discovering the many outstanding bluegrass groups and musicians by attending festivals and weekend bluegrass activities when he can.
Dave is active in a contemporary gospel band, Wing and A Prayer, at Immanual Lutheran Church in Crosby. He also plays in a group called the FINK band (Faith Incubators), a rock Christian music group that opens up the church youth confirmation classes on Wednesday nights during the school year. He also volunteers, along with friends, to play at the Care Center jam sessions and special events, and is active volunteering on numerous Via de Cristo (Cursillo) teams as a musician.
Dave's energies have shifted away from teaching and coaching to learning to flatpick, play the bass, banjo, dobro, and mandolin. He writes songs, mostly christian, but also contemporary stuff, including a little bluegrass, or at least what he thinks is bluegrass. His hobbies generally center around things that keep his mind busy, such as remodeling projects, learning Norwegian, family history investigations, and working with his hands.
Once in awhile he might go fishing. And if he’s really lucky, Brad Miller might take him.
